How is it calculated?
It traces the road route between your departure and destination, then splits it into small segments. For each segment it works out the direction the vehicle is travelling and where the sun sits in the sky, and adds up, minute by minute, whether the sun falls to the left or the right of the road. Finally it weighs the two sides against each other.
How reliable is it?
The result is a ratio across the whole journey — it never claims you will see no sun at all. Things it does not account for: clouds, tunnels, mountain shadow, the vehicle’s curtains, stops and detours. Train journeys are calculated along the road route, so if the line diverges noticeably from the road the answer is only approximate.
What about night journeys?
While the sun is below the horizon that time counts as night and is left out of the recommendation. If most of the trip falls at night you get a warning, and the recommendation is based on the remaining daylight.
What happens to my data?
No sign-up, no account. The departure, destination, date and time you enter are used for that one calculation and are not stored.
